Ancient Egypt, from the time of the Old Kingdom (around 2700 to around 2200 BC), was threatened by raids and robberies by tribes living in today's Libya, and therefore on the western border of the Egyptian state. During the New Kingdom period (ca.1550 to ca.1070 BC) on the western border of Egypt, its main opponent turned out to be a tribe called Meshwesh. The first mentions of this people or tribe appear during the reign of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who ruled Egypt in the 14th century BC. In the course of the 13th-11th centuries BC, the people almost constantly entered into more or less armed conflicts with the New State. Libyan warriors of that time were mostly foot units, armed mainly with bows and short swords or daggers. Warriors used defensive weapons very rarely, except for specially prepared cow hides, which they girded through their torso. Often Libyan warriors had their legs and arms tattooed.
