Nagoya Castle is a Japanese defensive and representative structure erected in the 17th century in the city of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. The first defensive structure on the site of the present Nagoya castle was built in the first half of the 16th century on the initiative of Imagawa Ujichiki. However, soon after the building was abandoned and partially fell into ruin. It was only in 1610 (in the same year in which the Polish-Lithuanian army won at K³uszyn) that the founder of the Tokugawa family of shoguns initiated the construction of a new castle, which was to act as the new capital of the Owari province. Interestingly, the building progressed at an express pace and was completed in 1612. Until the Meiji era (second half of the 19th century), the castle remained in the hands of the Tokugawa family. In May 1945, the building burned down completely, but in 1959 the castle keep was rebuilt, in Japanese nomenclature it is called tenshu. Currently, it is also planned to rebuild the representative part of the building.
